Train Window Views - New Jersey
New Jersey is a state of multiple personalities based on appearances. Jokes about things like the refinery visible from the Turnpike are a favorite topic for non-residents. Within the state is the argument about the culture of north versus south. Affluent towns and working class communities. Urban and rural.
This series focuses on images not seen by many. It is what’s visible by train. Most people are used to street-facing views of the state. But, because of restricted access to railroad rights-of-way, these scenes are missed by most or, at least only partially visible.
Embracing the challenges of sun glare, scratched and dirty windows, reflections, and motion blur, these images portray the honest, rough character of man-made scenes along rail routes in northern New Jersey. The coarse effect of these filters adds subtle changes suited to the subject matter.
These photos examine things I find intriguing or curious—industrial sites, power plants, warehouses, transportation infrastructure, suburban back yards, and so on. They are an important part of the visual fabric of New Jersey and tell another aspect of its complex story.
